“An altar’s importance is to be a designated space where the power of Creation resides- God flow.”
In a lot of ways, I knew that I had more than many people around me. I’d seen and felt poverty up close. The experience that I was living, was not that. At the same time, I knew I had less than many people around me. It affected me in ways I didn’t realize. Not so much physically- taking a shower with a microwaved bowl of water was fun for me! Rather, it taught me lack.
Lack (n): the state of being without or not having enough of something. Like a river in a desert drought. “Lack mindset” spread across the many grazelands of my journey. I experienced a lack mindset in my relationship with my body, my relationship with my confidence, my relationship with meyecellf and others, and my relationship with money.
I was no ordinary fool with money. Lack mindset taught me to keep my bills paid and aspire for abundant savings. However, I didn’t trust money. I didn’t trust that I had enough of it. I didn’t trust that it would always be there when I needed it. I did trust that it would never be there when I wanted it. I didn’t trust its willingness to provide. I simply had no faith in money. As I began working on trusting meyecellf and changing from my lack mindset to an abundant mindset, I realized that I needed to heal my relationship with money.
Amongst a mirage of money-focused management books, money-focused abundance affirmations, money-focused detachment lectures, etc. I decided to add a money altar into the mix. There are many altars in my home. Altars for ancestors, altars for Orishas, small prayer altars, and a money altar. An altar’s importance is to be a designated space where the power of Creation resides- God flow.
I based my money altar on Feng Shui practices. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice of arranging buildings, objects, and space in an environment to achieve harmony and balance in a way that will bring peace and prosperity.
Your home is a reflection of your life, and Bagua is one of the tools that Feng Shui practitioners use to better understand this connection. Each of the areas of the Bagua corresponds to a particular aspect of life, such as relationships, career, knowledge, and yes, even your financial prosperity. This particular area is called “Xun” in Chinese and is also known as the wealth or money corner. This position relates to your financial wealth and abundance, as well as the prosperity of all kinds. It also represents self-worth, which is deeply connected to material wealth: Our ability to receive wealth and abundance is determined in part by how we value ourselves.

According to Feng Shui, the money corner of your space will be in the farthest left corner standing inward from the door. I started by cleaning the entirety of my room making sure to take extra care of the farthest left corner. I performed a short prayer ritual by cleansing the space with fire (sage), water (Florida water), sound (singing bowls), and inviting creation energy into the space. Like with most practices you can always alter parts of the practice to align them with your divine being and how it is that you connect with yourcellf. However, what makes a ritual important are the components that don’t change.
How to Make a Money Altar
- Wood
- Wood is an Earth element that symbolizes growth, flexibility, and sustainability. All ways we want to redefine the idea of money! The most efficient representation of wood for your altar will probably be a plant. There are a variety of plants that are known to bring prosperity and good luck into your homes. Bamboo, the Coin Plant, or the Jade plant to name a few. Plants keep you grounded and connected to nature. Our obsessive desire for money subconsciously teaches our minds that we do not have money, and not having is a lack mindset. Groundedness is remembering that your connection to all sources of energy is what makes you alive.
- Water
- Depending on the size and placement of your altar you could add a sort of fountain. If you’re making a small one in the corner of your room like myself, then the water element can be represented by watering your altar plant. Water as an element represents flow and shift. In this way, it is vital to make sure that your water element is not stagnant and is able to flow infinitely. Water feeds the wood and they work together to enhance the flow of money into your life.
- Crystals
- The power of crystals for wealth often relates to cutting out any self-limiting beliefs and being able to find gratitude, inner strength, and personal power. Some crystals that I use on my money altar are:
- Citrine- unblocks your solar plexus and allows you to tap into your own sense of power and self-confidence
- Amethyst- unblocks your crown chakra and cuts stressors that may keep you from connecting with your higher purpose
- Pyrite aka Fools Gold- enhances wealth, prosperity, and success.

- Money
- Be intentional when manifesting. It all starts with your mind’s eye. It’s important to know what you want and to have a clear vision of it. Any doubt will ensure an uncertain outcome. Having money on your money altar reminds you to be intentional with your energy when you approach the space. “I want some more money,” will not generate as much creative energy as “I want to make an extra $500 by next Wednesday.” When you know exactly what you want then the U-N-Iverse will open that path and all of your actions will begin to align with that creation.
- Adornments
- This is where you can get creative with your altar, it is your altar after all! Adorn your altar with things that represent wealth and abundance for you! Things that keep you grounded and feeling good. Things that represent gratitude and contentment. Things that bring you closer to yourself. Here are a few things that I use or keep in mind whilst adorning my money altar:
- Herbs:
- Cinnamon: invites prosperity and abundance
- Bay Leaves: enhances intuitiveness and promotes manifestation release
- Cloves: wards off negativity and boosts cognitive skills
- Colors:
- Green: money, growth, gratitude
- Blue: calmness, stability, peace
- Purple: abundance, self-worth, success
- Candles
- Affirmations:
- “I always have more than enough for everything I need.”
- “More money is lining up for me right this moment.”
- “The Universe leads me to great opportunities.”
- Anything else you may find shiny or attractive to generate abundance energy

Things not to put on your altar: broken items, bills, trash, items representing danger.
The most important thing to remember when creating your altar is that the altar itself is not going to be a magic resolution to your “money problems.” The money altar is a Spiritual space where you can come authentically to connect with your highest self. Healing and releasing all negative narratives about money brought on by circumstances in your life. The altar is for cellf awareness enhancement and clarity.
